I find this to be a very good question. I will admit to having to hospital births. My first was a horrible, long labor with an epidural; my second(just 8 weeks ago) was a wonderful, fast, drug and intervention free birth. If I were to have another child I will be having an unassisted homebirth. Woman no longer trust their bodies to do what they have done for YEARS. Many are too caught up in the medical hysteria that surrounds pregnancy anymore. We are brought up to believe that doctors know best, and hospitals, drugs, and ionterventions are all par for the course of childbirth. It is actually quite sad. I am thankful that I educated myself more before birthing my second child. My labor and delivery were both amazing experiences!

ETA: Wow...I just read through all of the responses, and find it fascinating that childbirth is being compared to a medical emergency. It's a natural part of life people! NOT A MEDICAL SITUATION!

That is because monkeys are born from magical eggs.
It's true!
"Born from an egg on a mountain top
The punkiest monkey that ever popped
He knew every magic trick under the sun
To tease the Gods
And everyone and have some fun
Monkey magic,
Monkey magic,
Monkey magic..."

Now you believe me, right? Anyway the reason is that a human baby has a proportionally larger head than any other biped's baby and as such labour is harder for human women than most female animals.
Also think about it this way 25% of what a rabbit eats is it's own dung. If rabbits do this is there really a need for you to eat fresh food each day when instead sometimes you could save money and eat a turd? See what I mean even though an animal may do it that is no reason for a human to try!

I've been adivced to have a hospital birth from the moment I found out I was pregnant because of the medication I take. I'd rather give birth in a hospital and my son or daughter be delieved safe then a home birth with complications then have to be rushed to the hospital and not know if my son or daughter would make it. No way I'd be taking the risk.

are you thic or something. have you never been educated on these things? or even watched any programmes. Everyone on here is right. women go into hospital for the security that if anything goes wrong there are trained proffesionals there who can help. When my sister gave birth her temperature rose to 102 degrees and she had to have an emergency blood tranfusion. Without medical people she would have died!! And so could have my little neice! So why dont you take a minute to think to yourself all the problems that could happen and all the women who could die, and then ask yourself that question again. Idiot!

That may be the case but a lot of animals die during birth as with the mothers during delivery.. There are plenty of children who would otherwise not be alive if they did not get immediate medical attention. I have to add that this is a typical 'bloke' question, I'd like to see you giving birth !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Still not convinced ??? then take a look at our own history ... if going to hospital was totally unnecessary then why did so many women and babies die in the olden days when all babies were delivered at home. Surely if it is safer for the mother and child then I would say yes it is really needed.

I think this is a need due to the fact that society places this rule on us. I guess because there is more chance of women dying in child birth when they are not in hospital. And we are a little bit more advanced than a monkey or polar bear, although I adore them so understand what you are saying, but we all have our ways of doing things and this is our way as humans!!!

The way things are today it is considered the safest and cleanest way. We have chances of a lot of infections, if we have the baby just any where that comes in contact with a lot of people. There are a lot of diseases like diabetes that pregnant women get and it causes their babies to be bigger than average size(6 to 7 and some ounces considered normal) making it impossible for natural delivery and requires a c- section. (major surgery) There are people with uncurable stds and they need to be medacined up so the chances of the baby contracting these diseases are slimmer. A` lot of young people get pregnant and can't take the labor. or are too small ectt... Blood pressure and things are very easy to get out of whack. Drug abusers that still sbuse while they are pregnant. there are more chances of your child needing medical attention at birth. there are so many things going around now that it seems the safest to have your baby at the hospital. plus we have come to get used to being on pain medacine as labor progresses

Well I don't think a monkey or a polar bear would understand a midwife do you?

Plus we don't live in the dark ages anymore stupid.

I tell you what next time you have a problem that requires medical treatment/intervention don't go to a hospital because I'm sure a monkey or a polar bear wouldn't do that either.

Not all women do go to hospital many women opt for a home birth but the reason most women have babies in hospitalis because there are many things that can go wrong when your having a baby and not as straight forward as you seem to think. I was glad that i was in the hospital because my son was distressed and i had to have an emergency c section.

Well I had my first in hospital because it was 'expected' and being naive I went along with it. After dealing with the staff shortages and being 'abandoned' for most of my 9 hr labour, I vowed NEVER AGAIN.
I had my second baby at home with no complications and I think, although he was the heaviest and biggest of all my babies, he was the easiest. It was relaxed and over from start to finish in 3 hrs.
My third baby was due to be a home birth too but my midwife had a reputation of whisking mums to hospital at the slightest whiff of 'trouble' and inevitably she called an ambulance and rushed me in to deliver, NEEDLESSLY I might add, as after 7 mins of arriving at local hospital, my daughter was born.
When I conceived my fourth baby, I was on strong painkillers and all concerned made it clear that a hospital birth was necessary as my baby would probably be born underweight and with breathing problems. WRONG again, she was born on her due date, 7lb 4oz, and perfectly fine.
Maybe if women listened to their own minds and bodies, we wouldn't go running to hospital whenever the 'professionals' click their fingers.
Oh and by the way, when I announced to my FEMALE GP I was having a home birth with my second baby, she called me IRRESPONSIBLE to my face. You're supposed to have trust in these people mind!!!!!
