How do I find any information about the history of the house? Who are the best people to speak to about the ghost, or how to get rid of it? Priest/medium/excorcist etc. ?

Modern ghost hunters are just hobbyists trying to have fun or to make a name for themselves. That does not mean some of hem aren't knowledgeable.
read these two articles before making any decisions.http://www.ghostweb.com/pesky.html
http://www.ghostweb.com/pesky.html
Then go to their main page http://www.ghostweb.com/ and if you want to contact them they will email you . These are the only ones I really trust because their theories and experiences are in line with my experience with ghosts.

A word of caution beware of groups that have a very professional sounding name that sounds like a scientific organization and those who claim to be scientists. Most of the time the professional parapsychologists are just weekend ghost hunters trying to appear like real scientists.

check their collage credentials and their professional status with your city before believing they are real scientists. If they have a full time job during the week or are not a funded organization, just be careful what you believe. Beware of psychics and mediums also.

Best thing to do is study ghosts yourself and learn for yourself .

First I would document what is happening with as many facts as you can gather (time, who was around, what was seen, etc.). Begin to look for logical explanations for what is happening. If things are obviously not explainable you may want to talk to neighbors that have been in the area for a long time.

Cities have different agencies that handle building records, but it is all public domain. Just because someone may have died in the house does not mean that this is the ghost, nor does it mean that since no one has died there that a ghost can not occupy the house.

My advice would be to contact a local ghost hunting or paranormal research organization to help you. Be sure to ask them questions as well as get a sense if they really know what they are doing or are just trying to have a weekend hobby.

If you are going it alone remember, you always have the upper hand when dealing with ghosts. If you don't want them to bother you: tell them, in a stern voice without anger or fear. Most ghosts do not mean harm and are only curious about what is going on with them or with the living. Just remember they were once living people!

if you believe in stupid thinks like ghost and so on read this:
Follow the basics steps in the linked article on investigating a paranormal experience, place or thing to verify that you have a haunting and not just a drafty room.
Read scriptures aloud in the affected room(s). This has often been reported to eliminate lingering spirits. Muslims will sometimes leave a tape of Qu'ranic readings running on a continuous loop for several days or until the spirit departs. Christians may read from the Christian Bible. Jews can utilize readings from the Psalms or special sections of the Kabbalah and Zohar to dispel hauntings. Followers of Indian traditions read Bhagavad gita, Bhagavata Purana, chant Nrsimha Kavaca and names of God in general. They arrange for a puja (worship) on behalf of spirits. Much related information is given in Garuda Purana. Other religions have specific sacred readings they may choose to use.
Research the history of your house. Was there a sudden or violent death there that remains unsolved? Did someone die suddenly leaving a family behind? Were there stories of something left behind? A debt? A treasure? A wrong uncorrected?
If you find unfinished business, is there some way you can help? Can you encourage the local police to reopen the case if there was a murder in the recent past? Or can you interest area historians in helping to research tragedies long past? Is there a debt that can be settled, or a name cleared? If so, work toward completing the unfinished business.
Locate the burial site for persons who died in the home. Is the grave cared for, legible, free from debris and damage? If not, can you remedy the situation with a clean up, repair or even a new marker?
If you would like to eliminate the spirit without working through past issues, or if you cannot find the reasons, many people report success with a three step process:
Clean the home completely. Wash windows, eliminate clutter, bring lights into dim areas, wash floors and linens.
Get a small silver bell and a white candle. Walk through the house, making sure to go to each corner of each room, carrying the lit candle. Ring the bell in each corner of each room. Repeat the process walking around the exterior of the house, again ringing the bell at each corner.
Line the sill of each window and door with a thin line of sea salt (available in most supermarkets now.)
If the haunting persists, call in a professional to remove the spirits. Catholic Church has one priest in each diocese who specializes in exorcism.

Tips
You may want to try EVP or Electronic Voice Phenomena. Take a brand new tape and a good voice recorder and recorder yourself trying to contact the Ghost. After, listen to the tape. You may find a very soft voice talking back.
EVP also works with a microphone hooked up to your computer. It works better even. You can see anomalies in the sound rather then just hear them.

Warnings
Ghosts generally are not dangerous. They are just stuck where they are and can't leave for some reason.

First, WHY does the friend want to get rid of the ghost? I have one, and enjoy the ghost a lot! However, mine is friendly, female, and very caring. What type ghost does your friend have? Is the ghost doing BAD things to people or around the home? A ghost may linger in limbo, while not knowing he/she is even dead. I have sent some ghosts ON, as they were so confused. Some, have things to finish, and will go on their way AFTER they figure out some way to get enough attention paid to what they do, in order to GET attention! If I knew how the ghost behaved, I'd love to tell you more. They DO exist. My brother in law had a ghost, and I worked with the ghost lady, finding out through speaking with others about WHO had lived in the house, and how did the lady of the house die. It turned out that the lady had been notified by the military that her only son had been killed in the war. She was so depressed, of course. Then, one day, a knock on the door came, and THERE stood her living son! Totally in shock, the poor lady died on the spot! (not made up, a true story). The lady walks through her bedroom, upstairs in the home, with hands on her face and crying. We sort of adopted her into the home, as my brother in law felt very comfortable with her living there, still.

I also have a ghost. I recently had some Ghost researchers over. His name is Dale Kazmarek. He is out of the Chicago area. Do a yahoo search on Ghost Researchers in your area. Call or email several of them and explained some of the paranormal things that have gone on. They will come over with their equipment for free. It is really interesting. They set up cameras with infrared lights and we got to watch everything. Then they emailed us their report and in a picture they had taken in my sons room there was the face of a man. It was really creepy. Anyway, the people you get to come over will tell you what to do. If the ghost is harmless they generally tell you to leave it be. Ghost can be come attached to people just like they can structures. If that is the case then this could be with your friend forever.

> Myy friend has got a ghost in their bedroom.

Why does he share the room with the ghost? Anyway, what is done is done. As long as it is their bedroom, as you say, then the ghost has as much right to be there as he does.

get a sage smudge stick and some sea salt, and spring water, mix the salt and water in a bowl, and wash all the windows and window sills and door sills with it, then using the smudge stick which is lit, smudge every corner and under things and in the closets and any chest that might be big enough to hold anything, you could also put a crystal on each window sill, and he should have a bowl of black stones next to any mirror in the room. simply tell the entity it is not welcome here, to return to where it comes from or pass into the light.

The public records in the library will tell you who lived there. Your friend needs to ask the spirit what it wants it may need help to pass over to the other side your best bet is to speak with a medium who will be able to advise the best action or communicate with the spirit. We have my wifes Great Grandads spirit in our house he looks over our daughter on a night to keep her safe it is very comforting the spirit could be a loved one of your mate looking over him tell him not to be scared.
