Never use soap or a cleaner in the fridge! Your food will absorb whatever odor is in there. Use baking soda to freshen. You might even want to reclean it using water and baking soda. Baking soda is a great, nonabrasive cleaner. You can try a lemon, but there may still be residue from the cleaner that will need to be removed asap! Clean, fresh grass will also absorb odors. I moved into a house that someone had left the fridge unplugged and it smelled horrible. I was able to put fresh-mown grass in it for a few days before I actually moved in and presto - the smell was gone!

Personally I go with a very green aproach to cleaning and so I'd remove everything from the fridge, and then clean it out with a mixture of bicarb of soda (NOT baking powder - this contains bicarb but also has other things in it), and white vinegar. This will remove most marks and stains, the vinegar also helps to prevent mould forming and is good for removing smells as well.
If you then wipe down with warm water (no soap) this should reduce the smell. If it still lingers, then repeat the process, and then place a small bowl with dry bicarb in it in the fridge overnight to help soak up more of the smell. (preferably do this before you put any food back in the fridge - oven cleaner isn't very healthy for you so make sure if you've put any food like apples etc. directly onto the surfaces, that you wipe them over thoroughly before you eat them too!

If it smells as bad as oven cleaner.... Eeeeewwww.... empty out your fridge, clean with warm soapy water and a couple tablespoons of baking soda. After washing the fridge out, open a one pound can of coffee, put in fridge, close door and leave over night. Next day your fridge will be smelling fresh again. Always keep an open box of baking soda in your fridge to keep it smelling fresh. I change my box about every 3 months.
I had to use this technique with a freezer that had rotten meat smell. The coffee really did the trick!!

Another thing to try other than the baking soda is to wipe out the inside of the fridge with a mixture of warm water and some vanilla essence - this gives the fridge a nice vanilla smell and seriously wipes out most odours. Hope this helps! Good luck :-)
