We have paid holidays. We are only paid for the holiday if we come in the day (our scheduled days) before and after the holiday. For example if there is a holiday on Monday we must come in to work Friday and Tuesday or we will not be paid for Monday. Is this a common practice in professional companies?

It's been that way in every company I've worked for. The only way around it was to take a pre-approved vacation day before or after.

Yes it is, and being a manager of a call center I think it's fair. Usually if you ask for the day off prior& you are still paid.
What it's there for, is for people that abuse the system. They call in sick the day before or after to get a longer weekend and then expect to get paid for the holiday.

No. If it is a paid holiday you should be paid for it.

This is if you are a permanent employee. If you are temporary or part time then if the hoilday falls of a day that you do not usually work then you don't get it.

But if you are a full time work every day employee you get the paid holidays OR talk to your state's labor relation board.

Yes, it is pretty standard...Guess why?

Employees actually call out sick on the Friday before or Tuesday after the holiday in order to get a "long weekend". Imagine that!

That's been the practice in most places I have worked. They do this to prevent people from taking advantage of the holiday to create a long weekend.

Yes that is most common, you must work the day before and the day after. It isn't a labor law but several employers have this in their bylaws. I know sometimes it sucks but that is the way it is

Some do that so that people won't get an 'extra' day of vacation. It is faulty reasoning, though, because you could take your vacation another time and still get the 'extra' day. It's a dick move, if you ask me.

Yes, everywhere I've worked that is how it is, but usually there is a way to get around it if you get it approved before hand.
