Why is she hungry? Nutrition is even MORE important for a new or expecting mother, so if you haven't been seeing to her nutrition in the first place, that's not good. That said, it is unlikely that any cannibalism occurred because of lack of nutrition unless you've been starving her. Unfortunately some critters are better moms than others, and if your girl was pretty young, she may just not have been ready to be a mother yet.

They will sometimes eat their babies, but it's usually because of stress rather than hunger. She may have felt threatened or insecure. You may want to consult some person or reference for information on managing the hamster's environment to reduce stress.

YES! They are cannibals! Hamsters, mice and gerbils will readily eat their young if they are not getting enough protein. Also if they are too young and inexperienced, or if something is wrong with the babies.

the only reason a hamster would eat her babies, is if either:
1. you got your scent on the babies, and she didn't recognize them
2. if she felt threatened, by you or the father hammy.
hamsters are known to cannibalize their young, but if you leave her alone, and ONLY put your hand in th cage to change the food bowl, or water bottle, then you should be ok.

First time mama's often eat their young. This happens to other species also.
First time mama's are young and don't understand what is happening or what those little things are. She is scared and just eats them out of frustration. She may continue to eat her young and if that be the case, keep her away from the males or see if your vet can spay her.

are they in her cheeks? if so gently push them forward and they may come out. if there are any others in her cage take them out now. if it is too late to save these babies and she gets preggers again, make sure she is in a freshly cleaned cage by herself when she is due to have the pups, the others including dad will eat them and if they don't she will put them in her cheek pouches or eat them herself to protect them.
