Ok so numbers are supposed to add up or some other matematical eqation and the end number is the mysterious number 23...right? My question is why do they stop at 23 and not keep going until you get 5. Wouldn't that make 5 the mysterious number not 23?

Actually, you're right. I've heard Ruth Drayer, an author of several books on numberology, lecture and she said you keep adding so, yes, the number is 5.

Which, remarkably, is the number of digits on a hand or on a foot!

Because 5 isn't relevant to anything and then nobody would go crazy thinking it's all a conspiracy. People look for explanations and found that they could make 23 "prove" a lot of things. The number 5 doesn't prove anything, but it's a very good point you make.
