I will always say Chuck D, because he was part of the genre when it became mainstreamed. His lyrics were not about bling, but about social issues largely ignored by the mainstream. An extremely intelliegent man, he never went against what he believed in, and is still influential today.
5 most influential: (no particular order)
1. Run DMC: brought a new element and style
2. B*I*G: wasn't around too long, but definately left an impression and is still influencing today
3. Tupac: made incredible music, w/awesome lyrics, and is still a great listen after his untimely murder
4. Dr. Dre: w/NWA and after, he nows the art, lyrics, beat, and use of what hip hop is meant to be, not what it is today
5. Eminem: became what he wanted, did not cover who he was
