No chance. Your friend is thinking of a PGCE (post graduate certificate of education). You need a degree before you can be accepted onto such a course.
If you haven't got a degree already look into doing a BEd (bachelor of education) with QTS (qualified teacher status). It's a 4 year course and equips you with the skills to be a successful teacher. 98% of people on these courses find employment.
If your not sure about teaching I would advise you to go into a school and volunteer, just listening to children read. Keep a log of what you have done and if you do apply, you can use this as experience, which is what will really get you accepted on the course.
Good luck hope this helps

You must have a relevant degree to become a primary teacher. However, the course to which you refer may be for a high level teaching assistant - I live in Herefordshire and I'm a teacher, and I think this is what she is referring to. You could perhaps become a teaching assistant but not a teacher.

you're right, you do need a degree
you can add a PGCE (post grad. cert. education) to any degree which takes a uni year ie 9 months
you can study for a degree that carries QTS (qualified teacher status)
if you have a degree and significant experience of working with children you can train 'on the job' in the GRTP (graduate and registered training programes)
all rules and regs run by TDA (Trainng and Development Agency)

Most districts require a 4 year degree from an accredited school. Beyond that, you also must take a series of PRAXIS tests relevant to your particular subject area. All of those cost money and are a pain in the butt to complete. Oh yeah, you also are required by most district to do some sort of student teaching assignment before you can be hired.

I think it might depend on your state. Here you need a bachelor's degree and a teaching credential.
