THC remains in your system for quite some time, as will it remain in your baby's blood, regardless of how long you wait to nurse.
As for research, it's not that easy. Most mothers that nurse are a) not willing to smoke drugs to find out what could happen or b)also use other drugs so the results would be inconclusive.
I read a study once among Rastafarian mothers who smoked, on average, 4-7 blunts a day, that there children's behaviour etc was not noted to be any different than those that did not. How accurate that study is, who knows.
It's really more of an issue that any drug use can and will alter your ability to parent and make sound/wise choices for your child. In my opinion, marijuana would be at the lower end of the "worry scale", however, I would never condone it. If you must put your needs before your childs, then use an alternate feeding method and avoid any retributions.

Gosh people can be soooo mean. Ignore them. POT is not dangerous so everyone else can just shutup.. If it was so dangerous then how come its prescribed as a medicine....duh..Some of the books I've read say you should wait at least 45 minutes to an hour maybe two to be safe after drinking, but I am not sure about weed. Pot stays in your system for months so its probably not a good idea to smoke while breastfeeding if you are worried about it harming your baby. Good question... I wish I could tell you to ask your doctor but I am not sure if they turn you in to the authorities for child abuse or not?? Sorry wish I could help.

Since marijuana is fat soluble, it concentrates in breast milk. Measurements have shown that there is roughly 3 times the amount of marijuana in breast milk as there is in the mother’s blood stream. This substance then concentrates in the baby’s brain, but no studies have been done to show whether this has any effect on the baby’s behavior. Use in pregnancy has been linked to attention deficit disorder and learning disabilities, suggesting an effect on the developing brain, but no studies on the long term effects of using marijuana while breast feeding are available. Such studies would not be permitted because of the ethical problems involved. A doctor, with the help of a toxicology lab, would be able to detect the marijuana in the baby’s urine up to several days after ingestion through breast milk, depending on the amount and frequency marijuana is used by the mother. Most would not be able to tell just by looking at the baby, unless the baby were lethargic and had poor muscle tone.
All i can say is at least it is marijuna and not crack! Personally i have known numerous people who smoked their entire pregancy and delivered perfectly healthy babies. So try to ignore everyone's cristicism and just take care of your child. Being a potsmoker doesn't make you a bad mother. Do you buy pot over diapers? Unless that's the case, you're doing fine....Good Luck!

My mother smoked weed the whole time she was pregnant with me. In fact, she burned one on the way to the hopsiptal. I came out perfectly healthy. I am a college grad and have a great career. That's not to say that the same will happen for you. Just stop now and try for the baby. But I have not personally seen evidence that weed will harm the baby. Good luck.

I am not going to judge you as the others did, but I do have a small amount of advice. If you choose to smoke weed, totally your choice, but not a choice your baby had any say in, so it is simple, switch to formula. Smoking Marijuana and cigerettes and breastfeeding your child only increases your childs chances of SIDS. I lost a child from sids and it is not something i would ever wish upon anyone. So for the sake of your child seriously reconsider your options.

Geeeez, there are some really judgmental people out there! I applaud you for checking to see how long weed will stay in your system. If you didn't care about your baby, you wouldn't ask.
I don't really know what the waiting period is but I just had to comment on all of the "perfect" people out there. I appreciate the comment about cigarettes.

no only are you harming the baby by smoking pot around him.. the second hand smoke while smoking cigarettes is the leading cause of ear infections in infants,... just imagine what pot smoke is doing... i would try very hard to quite smoking or not to breast feed... and another thing.. what if something happen to the baby while you are high?? and you have to call ambulance or the police.. how good is it going to look as the mother who is high?? that can cause DCFS to come into the picture.. please rethink the whole pot thing not hat you have a baby... i am not trying to judge, but its not about you anymore is about the baby.

That is one of those questions not easily answered. Unfortunately it just hasn't been studied, so no one really knows the effects of weed on babies. So, my advice would be to either quit smoking until you are done nursing or quit nursing. If something did happen to your baby, you would have a hard time forgiving yourself.

Are you even serious?! first of all, you could be charged with child abuse and neglect for even smoking while breastfeeding. 2ndly, marijuana stays in your system for up to 30 days. And unless you are not going to feed your child for a month, the baby gets whatever you take in. Should the kid get sick and has to go to the doctor, have some tests run, and find weed in his system, you are going to jail right then and there. Period. Why would you even want to subject your child to that? Is it not worth his safety and well being for you to put aside your habit for the sake of your child?

Okay. I think you are as dumb as piss rock. But to answer your question, wait as long as it originally takes to get out of your system originally. A month or so ago a woman was put in jail because she did cocaine and then feed her baby and the baby was put into the hospital. I don't recommend smoking cigarettes either.
