You should read Crown Duel by Sherwood Smith! It is really good. However, it is a fantasy novel. But there is romance and court intrigue (which is pretty much mystery). Here is a little synopsis:
Young Countess Meliara swears to her dying father that she and her brother will defend their people from the growing greed of the king. That promise leads them into a war for which they are ill-prepared, which threatens the very people they are trying to protect. But war is simple compared to what follows, in peacetime. Meliara is summoned to live at the royal palace, where friends and enemies look alike, and intrigue fills the dance halls and the drawing rooms. If she is to survive, Meliara must learn a whole new way of fighting-with wits and words and secret alliances.
In war, at least, she knew in whom she could trust. Now she can trust no one.
Okay, so that probably doesn't do it justice, but just read it. You won't regret it. Promise.
Also anything by Tamora Pierce is amazing. The good thing too is, that if you get into her books you'll have like 16 of them to read. The first book in her series is Alanna: The First Adventure. They are also fantasy centered around a teenage female character.

I have many book recommendations. But it all depends what you're looking for...realistic, romance, fantasy, science fiction, sports, etc. For romance, I would recommend anything and everything by Sarah Dessen. Her books are Someone Like You, Keeping the Moon, Dreamland, This Lullaby, That Summer, The Truth About Forever, and Just Listen. Sonya Sones is also great--she's a very fast read too. I love What My Mother Doesn't Know. And there will be a sequel to it this spring called What My Girlfriend Doesn't Know. Jaclyn Moriarty is great for romance too...I loved A Year of Secret Assignments. For romance with a bit of fantasy try Twilight by Stephenie Meyer (and its sequel New Moon) and A Great And Terrible Beauty by Libba Bray. Other books I'd recommend are Hope Was Here by Joan Bauer, Saving Francesca by Melina Marchetta, and the Uglies trilogy by Scott Westerfeld.
For more recommendations go to my book review site:

When I was a teenager I liked to read the classics. I loved reading Dickens. I also got into reading Stephen King books. I guess it really depends on what interests you.
There is one book though that sticks out in my mind, although I think I read it when I was around 12 so it may seem a little young for a 16 yr old. But Walk Two Moons by Louis Sacher (I think) was a great book, especially for a teenager.

If you want some silly fun reading, I bought (and read) "The Princess Diaries" for my 16 yr. old sister.
For more serious and interesting reading, both my sister and I read Libba Bray's, "A Great and Terrible Beauty" and the sequel, "Rebel Angels". We are both anxiously awaiting the third book out this year!
I was also fascinated by Dianna Wynn Jones', "Chrestomanci" series. It's important that your read these in order!
1. Charmed Life (Charmed Life won the 1977 Guardian Award for Children's Books.)
2. The Lives of Christopher Chant
3. Witch Week
4. The Magicians of Caprona
5. Mixed Magics (The short stories can be read in any order.)
6. Conrad's Fate
7. Pinhoe Egg

Oh, man, books!!
Try Holly Black's VALIANT, and TITHE--these are edgy, great stories about young women(sixteen or so)who experience an alternate reality--in present-day New York. Both books deal with the Sidhe(SHEE), the Gentry, or the Fairy-folk. TITHE is about a girl who has lived a normal life--sort of--with her rocker mom, until she finds out she is a changeling, a fairy, herself. VALIANT is about anther teenage girl who runs away from home and meets a troll, who teaches her swordplay--and ends up stealing her heart.
Try Tamora Pierce's novels--they all feature strong female 'sheroes' to quote her...I love her books.
There are other authors: Marianne de Pierre's NYLON ANGEL is excellent, and exciting to read. Try Kim Harrison's THE HOLLOWS series, starting with DEAD WITCH WALKING.
As for alarge diary--I tell you what I use--a large notebook(school notebook), 200 pages or so, college ruled. They will last you a long time, plus they are relatively inexpensive--and you can dress up the cover using collage and lamination!
That would make the journal uniquely yours.
Good luck and happy reading!!
