Beginning a vegetable garden is a massive project but is worth a lifetime of happiness. Begin by getting the soil tested in several locations to determine what nutrients are lacking in your soil so that you can amend the soil before planting. Also it is not so much knowing what plants grow in the UK as knowing what has been successful right in your own neighborhood. Talk to folks with vegetable gardens that are near your home and find out what has worked best for them. Neighhborhood experience is the best education. Insects are good and bad. In a well balanced garden, insects take care of each other. If you use pesticides you might knock off the "good bugs." Get some really good gardening books that give you layouts for plants that complement each other. Give your plants lots of space for good air circulation. Til and enrich your soil. Any vegetable such as a carrot, parsnip, etc that is a root vegetable, needs unobstructed soil about 12 inches deep. Your top 6 to 12 inches of soil must be free of rocks, sticks, etc. A vegetable garden is a wonderful challenge but initially a lot of work. If you dont do this work, you will be disappointed with your results.

Every plant has it's insect pests some more than others, the best way to start is to plant potatoes this gets the soil into condition and is a useful crop, the following year you can the try cabbage, leeks, turnip, cauliflower, beetroot, etc. if you plant onions or carrots, flies specific to these plants are a problem, you can plant potatoes the second year but in a different part of the garden, get a good book on veg. gardening and it will last a lifetime

Get a good gardening book, i use one called the kitchen garden. I started to get into this 3 years ago by making 2 raised planters 4 foot x 16 foot long and building a small green house. The idea was to encourage my young lad to grow and then eat real food , not just stuff from a shop. Have gone on to grow all sorts of veggies in the beds and now using tubs, as well as getting lots of fruit from apples to berries etc . The taste is worth the work. This from a guy who lives in cold grim Yorkshire and seams to be able to grow stuff without too much trouble Good luck and enjoy the fruits of your labour

Hi, I'm in NC, USA, so I'll help as much as I can. First find info on veggies to grow. Check with your local garden store on local choices. Locate an agricultural college in your area on the web and see if they have a chart of planting and harvesting dates. They can also lead you to flowers that can coexist and repel pests. We have marigolds here. The best thing for the bird repeling is a net. If you are in a rural community chickens love vegetable gardens they'll eat your pests for you but don't let them eat your veggies.

field gardening is a reliable way for a starting up gardener to get some theory of what growing to be greens or flowers. I absolutely have gardened for fifty yrs and field gardening has its' own set of issues. I continually use great packing containers with a great number of compost mixed with commercial growing to be medium. i realized compost is too heavy on its own to apply in packing containers- it must be lightened up with sand, gravel, or the elements in bagged potting soil. if you're growing to be greens with a large root equipment, you want a deep pot to provide the roots room to strengthen, or about mid-summer at the same time as it receives warm, the roots will out-strengthen the pot and favor extra water than you could grant. it really is a reliable theory to enable the packing containers get some shade in the course of the favourite area of the day to save the soil from drying. in case you could backyard on a sunny porch that receives some shade will be appropriate. make positive you feed the soil regularly with a diluted answer of regardless of fertilizer you're utilizing. in case you purchase potting soil that consists of fertilizer, that is likely all the flora will favor. verify the flora regularly to make sure if insects are making holes on your leaves earlier they get a probability to do extra harm than you could restoration. you could continually upload extra compost or soil to the genuine layer of your pot if the soil compacts and could depart you room to strengthen smaller flowers below the taller ones, jointly with lettuce grown below a tall tomato plant. i'd connect a gardening mag, jointly with organic and organic Gardening. it grant you with many constructive tricks on gardening.
