The cells of the body of a sponge are supported by spicules, they're considered skeletal elements.

Spicules can also help larvae stay afloat while in the plankton or reach the bottom at settlement, enhance reproduction success, or catch prey.

(btw, the role of spicules and skeletons in deterring predation has not been demonstrated)
