No independent party has verified the Bush claim that the warrantless wiretaps only involved foreign phone calls.

So we are just supposed to take the word of a politician. The politician who said, ""Any time you hear the United States government talking about wiretap, it requires -- a wiretap requires a court order," (George Bush April 20, 2004)

"Wild accussations?" The NYT reported the administration authorized wiretaps without going through the FISA courts. Bush responded claiming that the wiretaps were only on international calls to and from sources with suspected terrorist connections.

My question is whether or not Bush's claim has been verified by any independent third party?

You hit the nail on the head! Yeah, I don't buy what Bush has said about the wire taps at all. IMO, it may involve all cell phones calls because of the fact that the cell phones transmissions go out of the US territory to be directed to the right place. The whole thing has a lot of unanswered questions and the high possibility of abuse.

No one can verify it because there has been no oversight. The last congress looked the other way while the administration bypassed FISA statues which require that you obtain a court order to eavesdrop on American Citizens. The Bush administration orginally contended that Bush did not NEED to seek authority from the court (as the law demands) but rather he could continue his warrantless wiretapping program because the terrorist threat was just so dire that they could not be bogged down by the beauracracy of seeking warrants from the FISA court. He could have done this LEGALLY by having congress enact legislation to modify the FISA statutes to conform with today's security needs, but instead he broke the law. The ironic thing is, shortly after the Democrats took control of congress, Alberto Gonzoles issues a memo stating that the administration will NOW comply with FISA statues so any previous law breaking would now be moot. LOL

Don't worry though ,there will be hearings on this, and we all know that sunlight is the best disinfectant. :)

Why worry about it? Been going on for years and will continue to be that way. Plus it isn't your job to worry about who or what is wiretapped and whether or not Bush is a liar or not. Just remember, Americans voted him in!!!

Well believe the opposite of anything Bush says.

They have been listening to our calls for years now, this is nothing new.

I answered this question already but thanks for the points. In poll after poll 60-70% of Americans support wire tapping. If you ain't breaking the law you got nuttin to worry about bud.
