Well, he has the villain's face sure enough. But I've seen Van Cleef play Mr. Goodguy roles too. I think he's a pretty good actor though.

Lee Van Cleef goes back to bit parts in late 50's westerns and always the bad guy. However, he will be best remembered as Colonel Mortimer with Clint Eastwood. He also starred in films after that like the 3rd Magnificent Seven film when he took over the role of Chris from Yul Brenner. I don't think he can be regarded as the best villain as most of his best work came later when he was famous and apart from The Good The Bad and The Ugly he always played a good guy. Best villain Jack Palance or Richard Boone.

Lee Van Cleef was always one of my favourites whether he was acting a hero or a villain - from High Noon, through the Spaghetti Westerns to his Ninja based TV series "The Master". He was a great actor and an accomplished martial artist.

As "villain actors" go though, I think Christopher Lee takes a bit of beating - Dracula, Saruman, Count Dooku, to name but a few of his many villainous roles.

I always had a soft spot for Bruce Dern, the man who killed John Wayne. Van Cleef is a good choice, though. Loved him in High Noon and Gunfight at the OK Corral.

Lee Van Cleef is good but I believe Jack Palance has him beat.

Honourable mention goes out to Alan Rickman for his villian in Die Hard.

Lee Van Cleef was a bit wooden .. But ... I loved him in those westerns alongside the legend that is Clint.

He was the master, although his looks belied him as he was the nicest man you could ever wish to meet. But he was magic in those western with Clint Eastwood and many other famous western movie stars.
