First thing to do is get into the setup for the router. You usually do this by typing the IP address associated with the router. This is normally :

192.168.1.1

Next, go to Wireless Security and enable WPA and TKIP. You will have to give a passphrase. Make it one that is hard to guess and easy to remember. You could use a passage from the bible. Most people who would hack your computer wouldn't read the bible and they are all going to hell anyway.

Next, add a MAC address filter. You can find the MAC address for your notebook if you go to a command prompt and type in :

ipconfig /all

Now, when you connect to your wireless network you are going to be prompted for that passphrase. Type it in and your notebook should "remember" the passphrase every time it logs on.

Change the passphrase periodically.

I hope this helps.

You need to access your routers setup page look in the manual for an address to type into your laptops web browser then click on security or security settings and set it up from there. Have a look on the company that made the routers website and see if you can find a guide there

You need to access the web interface of your router. Open Internet Explorer, or any web brower and type in the URL address bar:

192.168.1.1 <--if your router is a linksys (default password is "admin")
192.168.0.1 <--if your router is a netgear (default username/password is admin/password)

I forget what D-link and the others default IP addresses are, but it should be in the user guide that came with your router

Once you access your router's web interface you're going to want to change the default username and password PRONTO! But inside there, you'll see options for security, port forwarding, etc. Again, check your user guide for the specific details, but at least this will get you started.

you need to setup wep, mac address filtering, and turn off your broadcasting. WEP will encrypt the data traveling back and forth from your computer, MAC filtering allows you to enter a unique number that is only associated to your network card(every network card has one like a serial #)and then the router only lets the computers in whos mac address is in the list, and then another thing to do is turn off the broadcasting that way no one in the neighborhood sees your access point, its hidden but your computer will work fine. These are a few things you can do to help protect yourself

Open your router's configuration page. You need to enable WEP encryption, it's the easiest to set up anyway. Then, just remember the key and put it in when you need to connect a wireless computer to it.

Turn on the encryption (wither WEP or WPA) in your router's setup. Then anyone wanting access to you network will need to know the correct key for access.
