a new study relesed states that being a dem or repub is a personality trait that can be identified at a very young age
it also states that within these personality traits that repubs also have a fear of death more so than that of thier dem counter parts
i heard this on the michel nedved show (right wing talk show)
so the question is :
do think that peoples political allince falls more into a personality trait or has more to do with the background that they were raised from and also how true to you find this study to be
(i'd tac a link on here but cant find it and dont have time to do a proper search so if you know of this please link to it in your awnser! cheers!)

I think it's a combination of their background as well as their parent's influence. However, regardless of this, I believe your political affiliation can actually change quite frequently.

Democrats favor a strong government with a strong push for social reform in the form of programs such as welfare, social security, national healthcare, etc. This would naturally be favored by the lower class, the highly empathetic, and anyone that's had issues in life they don't feel strong enough to resolve themselves. It's a comforting system that borders on socialistic ideals.

Republicans favor a weaker central government with a stronger focus on the military and economy. They believe people should help themselves for the most part and if they can't, it's up to individuals to find a way to help those that can't help themselves. This is more towards the middle class and higher class that have been taught that it's shameful not to make it on your own accord in life.

You're going to find a nice mix of all people in both groups as the party lines grow thinner every day and really it comes down to whether or not you're conservative or liberal as to which side you would affiliate yourself with, but again, nothing is definitive and both sides have to realize they can't survive without the other.

As far as the study goes, I believe it's possible by looking at the parents and their lifestyle when they're young, but I don't see absolution in the study because there are far more factors that affect one's decision and because the study hasn't been around long enough to follow the subjects through college and early adulthood which are most likely to shape your political views.

Hope this helps :)

There's probably some truth to that. But it's likely due to environment. My parents are staunch right-wingers. I grew up hearing a lot of what they had to say and eventually grew to form my own opinions. While I agree with some of their beliefs, I am in no way a hardliner. I believe in the basic mantras of the Republican Party (laissez faire, Capitalism, Entrpreneurialism, making something out of nothing, etc.), the dems have some valid views as well.

It doesn't have a lot to do with background in my case. My whole family is Republican and I am a Democrat. I was raised ina a very conservative household, but just feel like the Democrats represent my views more than Republicans. However, I do agree with Republicans on some issues.

I remember seeing a study on childhood personality and later political affiliation. The article below (by the Conservative Voice, no less) says that whiny kids turn into conservatives.

But there is one thing they forget....that as we age and have children, we come closer towards the middle.

Repubes have the reasoning capacity of a two-year old. The difference is that Libs continue their mental and moral development after that point.

I think that political affiliations are determined more by nurture rather than nature. In fact, it's called political socialization. Also, how would heredity account for the people who are either politically independent or who change their political affiliations?

I think it has to do more with the environment. I am a dem and both my parents are dems. I'm much more moderate than my parents because I live in a very conservative city and it has tempered my views.

Personality. Conservatives believe in "Tough Love" & liberals believe in loving you to death. It's pragmatism (or in todays America Blind faith) vs compassion & that only comes from a persons personality.

My wife and I are complete personality opposites, but our strict morals based on the Bible lead us to side with the republicans more than the democrats.
