You should breastfeed as long as possible. The AAP recomends to breastfeed through the first year. So that means more than 12 months. They recommed only breastmilk for the first 6 months. You need to do what it right for you and your baby. Good luck.

I say that you should breastfeed for at least the first year if you're comfortable with it and if that's what you wanna do. It's all up to you how you feel about it and how long you want to continue to breastfeed. The longer the better, I think. Some experts even suggest breastfeeding for the first two years. Personally I think that's too long, but it all just goes by your preferences.

I don;t think women should feel pressured into breastfeeding for any set amount of time. It's all well and good saying 12 months or more if you find easy to learn (and so does your baby for that matter.) I personally managed to do it for 3 months and found it very tiring and that breastmilk just wasn't filling enough for my baby to be content after a feed. I don't know many women who manage to exclusively breastfeed for 6 months, well done to them if they do. But i certainly wouldn't look down on anyone who bottlefeeds. Your baby will tell you what makes it most happy and content and i believe in following the babies lead. Sometimes breast isn't always best. Good luck whatever you (and your baby!) decide to do.

If your baby is happy and you're happy then you can go on breastfeeding as long as you want. Some mothers breastfeed up to about 2 or 3 years! Apparantly if you breastfeed over about 18 months you need to give them a top up with solids aswell.

A multitude of health organizations recommend breastfeeding up to and beyond the first year, many of them even suggest until at LEAST two years of age.

Some of the reasons to breastfeed until at least two years of age:
1) continued immune protection
2) the strong comfort it provides
3) the perfect "brain" food for building brains (FAR better than cow milk)
4) don't have to worry about lack of nutrition when going through that toddler stage of picky eating or not eating at all
5) don't have to worry about toddler not getting enough to eat when ill and uninterested or unable to eat solids
6) child-led weaning is much less stressful, painful, and traumatic for both mother and child.

The best is 12 months or longer!!! But, do it as long as you can, you will know when the time is long enough. I quit when my son was 4 months. I regret it so much now... I wish I had breastfed him longer, so he could have gotten more benefits. As soon as I quit, he started with colds, etc! It's a personal decision, and I'm sure that you'll find the right one for you and your baby!

They say 12 months is best but some kids will lose interest before the 12 month mark.

Most doctors recommend a minimum of six months, but if you want to, you can breastfeed as long as your body can produce milk.
