It is very possible that your turtle has an eye infection. If you don't treat it right away he can die. Go to Petsmart or Petco and get turtle eye drops. Put 1 drop in each eye twice a day. Also you can get those blocks that disolve in the water to treat fungal infections. Maybe that will get him feeling better. Red eared sliders are prone to eye infections. I put drops in once a week just as a preventative measure.

Closed eyes are a sign of infection- poor diet, dirty water, or poor cares are the usual culprit.
Red-ear sliders can easily live for 20-30 YEARS in captivity if properly cared for. The problem is that most people don't want to give them the right care.
For example:
- tank should be at least 10 gallons for every inch of shell length
- tank should be heated to 75-80F
- water should be filtered with a filter about 3 times bigger than a fish tank needs
- basking sites need to be provided, and heated to about 90F
- ultaviolet lighting (specifically, UVB) needs to be provided- and the UVB rays won't penetrate normal glass, so being near a window does not count
- diet should be about 1/2 high quality turtle pellets with the rest being mostly bugs, worms, etc.

Sliders live a long time. The people that say they dont are the people that either a) eat them or b) dont care for them like they should be cared for.
If he's closing his eyes underwater, he could be resting, as long as he's not moving. If he's swimming with them closed get him to a vet as this can mean he's not feeling well at all.
He'll need a UV light(10-25$ at a store) and he'll need a huge pond when he gets older. Have fun with him, take care of him, and please please please dont let him get sick. Bring him to a vet.

my res was purchased in 1970 so I'm not so sure about the not living for long statement. When he is asleep and especially this time of year it takes a few minutes and a little eye rubbing for him to get his eyes open and wake up...they are slow creatures after all.

Does it have a basking lamp and a place where it can get completely get out of the water? If they can't completely get out of the water, then they'll grow fungus on their shell. They should live for a long time if taken care of properly, and they have to have access to water.
