I have no clue what the heck a mercedes 312 or 412 is... are you talking about a mercedes Sprinter, or a car?

The two models have different gross-vehicle weights (and hence different payload capabilities).

The 312 will have a GVW of either 3200 or 3500kg (you'll have to check the VIN plate of any individual vehicle to find out which), giving it a payload of around 1400kg or 1700kg.
The 412 will have a GVW of 4600kg, giving it a payload of around 2700kg.

Bear in mind that vehicles with a GVW of over 3500kg have different operating regulations (tachograph, speed limits, etc.) from those with a GVW of up to 3500kg.
Also, new drivers will have to pass an additional test to drive a vehicle with a GVW above 3500kg - check your licence, as it depends when you passed your test.

The "12" part of the model name means it has an engine rated at around 120bhp (probably the 122bhp 2.9-litre turbo diesel). A 308 has only 80bhp.
