I have been using the withdrawal for about 3 years with no problems at all. My partners have always practised it perfectly and I've never got pregnant. The statistics on many websites, e.g.

http://www.youngwomenshealth.org/malecontraceptives2.html state that out of every 100 women using this method for a year only 4 will get pregnant. That is pretty good stats considering that with the oral contraceptive 1 woman a year will get pgnant-with perfect use and 5 will with 'typical use'. Why is it only people who have either claimed to use this method but not stopped at the right time or people with no experience of this method who act like it is such an irresponsible method to use?
Can anyone actually hold their hands up and say that they know they practiced it perfectly and got pregnant?
I think it is a far better method than the pill-pumping your body full of chemicals every day and reeking havoc with your hormones. Any one agree/disagree/have anything to say on the subject?

I have been checked for all STD's, thanks, so have my partners. I'm not stupid.
All sex is a gamble as not contraception is 100% reliable. I know it a marginally larger gamble than the pill-if the pill is used correctly but how many women actually use it correctly (take it at the same time every day, use extra protection if the have diarrhea/sickness, etc.)
One again only the pious and uninformed seem to have answered. To the lady who did get pregnant on this-did you always practice it perfectly?

There is no method that is 100% effective in preventing pregnancy except for abstinence. That you have been using this method for 3 years and haven't gotten pregnant is pretty unusual. Over the years I have been in healthcare, I have known many many women who have gotten pregnant using this method, then those that have not.

The fact that YOU have been lucky enough within the past 3 years not to get pregnant from the withdrawal method, does not mean it is safe for everyone.
Not using condoms breeds higher chances for not only pregnancy, but STDS as well (both curable and incurable). This is especially true since you say you have been with more with one partner. The more partners you're with, the higher your chances of getting an STD or AIDS without a condom. Men lie or don't always know they have it. Don't think it won't happen to you because it can.

I know a lot of people who have gotten pregnant using withdrawal. It has been deemed to be the most unsafe method of "contraception".

Whether someone uses the Pill or other contraception method is their own personal choice. Some women like myself use the pill for medical reasons, not birth control.

It's your choice whether you want to play Russian Roulette with your body for an accidental pregnancy or STD or death from AIDS. Withdrawal does not protect you. Be safe and at least use a condom.

There is a wide variety of contraception methods available, so your choices are not between hormonal birth control and withdrawal.

Right from the start, your argument is fallacious.

Using the withdrawal method is playing Russian Roulette with your fertility. That is the be and and end all of that discussion.

Condoms, when used properly, are both a method of contraception and a methods of SAVING LIVES. Don't discount them so quickly. It just takes a bit of planning, as in a trip to the drug store once in a while, in order to have condoms around. And women should be buying them as well. Don't tell me they ruin the mood, because if you put it on him, it does anything but. And don't let your b/f get away with telling you that he loses sensation. Yes, he does lose some sensation, but that means that he lasts longer, and that's good news for the both of you.

So, how about education yourself and your partner(s), and then you can stop giving out dangerously inaccurate information.

I completely agree with you, but the problem is that most men do not have that much control over their bodies.
I can see why so many disagree though.. Plus, some aren't as bright as others if you know what I mean, and may use this fact as an excuse not to exercise caution.
I am totally against birth control, it feels unnatural, especially since it irregulates the menstral cycle. My husband and I have never used any type of birth control, and I have never been pregnant.. not yet, anyway.. :(
I can understand where you are coming from.

I used this method and got pregnant. Think about it, The statistics say 4 out of every 100 women each year get pregnant. There are way more than 100 women using this method so lets say there are 30,000 women using this method a year that is like 7,500 women a year getting pregnant compared to 1 or 5 on birth control. Pre ejaculate has just as much sperm in it if not more then the ejaculate itself. Be careful, I am not saying to go on the pill but a condom may not be a bad idea,

yeah, but no one makes any money off of the rhythm/pull out method. ( i.e. doctors, pharmacist, etc.) My husband and I currently use that method (I was on the pill for two years and it screwed up my system BAD. My hormones were out of whack, I was forming cysts on my ovaries, the Estrogen overload was affecting every area of "down there") I can say that the pull out method's worked for us, but only because he PULLS OUT..... I wouldn't advocate this method though because too many people don't appreciate the responsibility of having sex. (i.e. having sex, no matter what method you use can lead to pregnancy and if you're not ready to be a parent, you should keep the pants zipped.) You make alot of very good points and alot of people are giving you grief that they shouldn't.

Several friends of my kids are results of the pull out method. That's enough for me to know that I need to practice better birth control methods than that.

UMMM what about STD's?!! and you've been lucky! you should consult your gyno as well... i mean a condom is not a chemical you'd put in your body....and if you have the same partner for all these years.. well guess again you've been lucky - hopefully, he'll be there for you if you do get pregnant..

First of all you should not be having sex with a boyfriend or "partners", you should be married. If you have to use a latex or any material to separate you from your man or "pull out", you should not be having sex (unless married and on BC)

Otherwise, the answer to your question is that you are not very safe. Pregnancy can happen typically one week a month. Herpes, warts, HIV, HPV, etc.etc. can happen any day of the month.
