It's tough getting a new show on the air and even harder to find, maintain and grow the audience. Surface failed in one of those respects. I didn't watch it, so I can't speak to the quality of the show, but perhaps that was lacking, or perhaps it was due to poor marketing on NBC's part (NBC, right?). Or, and this is probably the reason, it was put up against a hit show on another network, kind of like how ABC's Roseanne's "Dan's Heart Attack" episode conspired with the NBA playoffs to prevent Fox from greenlighting a Doctor Who series back in 1996.

Yes, Surface tanked in the ratings.

I really really liked that show. It didn't have huge ratings so it got cancelled. SciFi has done marathons of the show during the day and plays them all.
