I think "I am in the 9th grade" is more gramatically correct. The only correct way to leave out "the" would be to say, "I am in grade 9".

9th grade I am in. That's what Yoda would say. but I would say I am in the 9th grade. And I'm a writer. Reword the question from another angle and you'll see it's correct. "when I was in the 9th grade." is better then "when I was in 9th grade."

With ordinal numbers we must use the article "the."
Ordinal numbers = Ist, IInd and so on
Cardinal numbers = 1, 2, 3....
So, you can say the following
I am in class 9, or I am in the 9th grade.

Here you are telling your listener exactly which grade, the ninth grade.
It is used to mark a noun "ninth grade" which you are using generally.
