We vacuum every day, sometimes more is someone makes a mess on the floor, two of the rooms downstairs have wooden floors with large rugs, but we still clean the floor every day and vacuum the rugs every day.
It really depends if you have anyone at home everyday making a mess.
If every one was out all day then every other day.

As often as you consider necessary. It's not uncommon to vacuum heavy traffic areas, like entryways and doorways, daily. Remember to go over these areas slowly to ensure maximum vacuuming efficiency. Quite simply, the more dirt and debris kept off your carpet, the better it'll look.

Once a week minimum, as a check , see how much dust congregates on the surface of your furniture tops, this also will be in your carpet, the life of your carpet will last longer if hoovered less but you will have a visit from carpet and dust mites, it is softening that I do when I look at the carpet and say you need a clean,

as many as is required - if it is just you and you're not at home much then once a week would be OK - that works out at 4 or 5 times a month

Calculate by:
number of pets living in the house, double up for very hairy ones (x)
number of children (or messy adults) (y)
number of times in-laws visit (z)
a tolerance for filth factor (q) (from 0.0001 = clean freak to 30 = high tolerance)
(4x+1/2y+z)/q

depends on the traffic the carpet receives. Atleast once a week just to get up the dust mites and footprints...
