Raves are where crowds of people meet up and get off there heads on drugs and dance all night long to RAVE music, they are contraversial because they are usually held in old warehouses or farmers fields and are usually illegal, the people who attend them are usually off there heads on ectasy and dope and harder stuff and they dance all night long.
The musioc is loud and extremly bassy and in my opinion rubbish....but each to there own.

A rave is typically a party or festival or event that lasts several hours through the night. Because of the movement to outlaw these events, most of them are 'underground parties' that are not publicly advertised. Most of the time electronica/trance/drum n bass music is played by several dj's. What made raves become so 'controversial' is the drug scene that quickly became a staple of the events. These drugs (most commonly ecstacy, but also included methamphetamine, speed and ketamine, amongst others) were very easily available at the events. Also contributing to this 'controversy' were the groups that would go to these raves that advocated harm reduction in the drug use. Organizations such as 'DanceSafe' would test ravergoers ecstacy pills to make sure there were no other more harmful drugs laced into the pill. They would not take the pills away, which caused a great amount of concern to politicians, law enforcers, and of course parents. What's even more questionable is the number of police officers and paramedics present at raves, yet their unability to do anything about the large number of people who are under the influence of drugs. The only thing they can enforce and regulate is if they were to see a drug deal take place, or if they witness a partygoer actually consume the drug.

This is just some basic information on raves in general. If you google raves, I'm sure you'll get a lot more specific information! Hope this helps!

Watch the movie "Go" with Katie Holmes, it will answer your question. The movie basically starts at a rave and takes place on and off there. Just watch it and then you'll know exactly what a rave is.

~Oh, and it is actually a good movie, despite the fact that Katie Holmes is in it.

A rave (sometimes referred to as a rave party) is an all-night dance event where DJs and other performers play electronic dance music and rave music. The slang expression rave was originally used by people of Caribbean descent in London during the 1960s to describe a party.[1] In the late 1980s, the term began to be used to describe the subculture that grew out of the acid house movement that began in Chicago and New York and flourished in the United States, United Kingdom and Australia club scene.

The availability of drugs—particularly ecstasy—has caused raves to be targeted and criticized by law enforcement officials and parents' groups.
