Toy stores sell lots of hand puppets, but I think that talking "through" a hand puppet is a stupid idea. If asked someone a question and they whipped out a frog or a cow puppet and started talking in a funny voice, I would just walk away and call the men in white coats.

2 pieces of 9' x12" felt or other stiff fabric
Hair:1 scrap of felt or fake fur
black fabric paint or glue on wiggle eyes
red fabric paint for mouth.
Fabric Glue or thread to sew or
glue together
Step 1. Fold one piece of 9" x 12" in half
along the long side of the felt. Cut out one hand puppet body on the fold. Repeat for the other side of the hand puppet body. This will be the front and back of the body.
Step 2. Match right sides together and sew front to back around outside edge using 1/8" seam allowance. Leave bottom edge open for hand Turn right side out.
If using glue squirt thin line of glue close to outside edge of one piece. Then match wrong side of other hand puppet body piece to the outside edge and press pieces together .Allow glue to dry completely. Leave bottom edge open for hand Do not Turn.
Step 2.
Paint eyes on with black fabric
paint or glue wiggle eyes in place.
Paint mouth on with red fabric paint.
Step 3.
Cut the two pieces of hair from felt or fake fur on the fold. Stitch the small bang piece to the back of hair around the outside edge matching center of bang piece to center back of head at top. Turn right side out and stitch or glue to head.

find one of your dad's old socks. ask for his permission first (because you don't want to ruin dad's only socks and then get a whipping!) glue googley eyes to the sock and use permanent markers to complete the face.
Congratulations you now have a sock pocket.
