One way to get rid of an "UNKNOWN" Virus is to reformat and reload the operating system. Another way is to find out which virus it is, possibly by using other antivirus software. Some free antivirus software is a www.majorgeeks.com

STOP!!!!!
Reformat and reload is the LAST thing you attempt. It will cost you any documents, photos, address books, music, buddy lists and ANYTHING that you have added since your computer was new!

Go to a friends computer, navigate to the following places. Download the files, burn to disk or to a flash drive, take home and install on your PC.

Download.com is an excellent resource for many different software products; some free, some free to try (if you are trying to decide whether to buy). One of the best free anti-virus programs is AVG:

Also, you might want to consider free anti-spyware utilities:

Spybot Search and Destroy:

http://www.download.com/spybot-search-de...

AdAware:

Also, you will want a free firewall;

Download, install and run all 4 and you will be just about as safe as you can reasonably be; but do not ignore best practices like not opening attachments from people who you do not know, etc.

If you are in Windows Xp do a system restore to the date before you downloaded the item. When you reboot install the appropriate antivirus programs. I prefer the free versions available through CNET. I find both the AVG and AntiVir to be useful. They both can be run daily, at seperate times, to provide a daily cleaning of your system. The new Norton Spyware scan available on the yahoo toolbar is another great tool. Run it before you log off. Good Luck

If you can't download the software you need, buy a magazine with anti-virus or anti-malware tools. If you've got the net, you can go online and get a free scan, but it'll cost to remove it.

If you can't download anything maybe it's affecting your browser capabilities - download another browser (like K-Meleon, Firefox, Opera) and try using that to install something like AVG or Norton Anti-Virus.

YOu mean to tell us all that you were downloading crap from the internet WITHOUT ANY AV running???? Shame on you.

There are several online anti-virus web sites that run the AV scanner from the web. Start there.

I don't believe there is a virus that prevents downloading stuff.

Maybe you need to be more detailed in your explanation.

Here's what I suggest: go to http://www.mbusbyuk.info/links.html and scroll down the page to the free online scanners - I would suggest you choose the Panda ActiceScan link because it's extremely thorough. When you get to the Panda site, make sure you select the Full System Scan.
That should solve your problem.
Good Luck!

run diskwarrior on your computer and it will go through and filter everything. if that doesn't work, then try and back everything important up, and delete things that you don't need, that could be where the virus is hiding.

if nothing works, send it to a computer shop and let them deal with it.

I would use FreeScan from McAfee as you do not have to download it. http://us.mcafee.com/root/mfs/

I would also suggest using McAfee Stinger at http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/

Both of these tools can help quite a bit.
