A hornet is actually a type of wasp. "Wasps" refers to all members of order Hymenoptera and suborder Apocrita, except for those that are bees or ants. The yellowjackets are the best known type of wasp, and they look very similar to bees, but other types of wasps include sawflies, wood wasps, and velvet ants. Wasps are predatory creatures, and they play an important role in natural pest control.

Hornets are members of the genus Vespa, which falls under the suborder Apocrita, making them wasps. Hornets are the largest wasps among those that have eusocial colonies (queen, workers, drones). There are about 20 species of hornets, most of them native to tropical Asia. Two species are native to parts of Europe, but the only hornets in North America are European hornets that were accidentally introduced fairly recently.

Hornets are much bigger. Being stung by a hornet is apparently extremely painful and it used to be said that 7 hornets can kill a horse.
