During labor the tens unit is only effective if you have back labor- it wont diminish the pain sensations of contractions otherwise- so if you are laboring naturally, but have no back labor the tens unit would be useless.
Usually hospitals have tens units already available and you wont need to buy one. It' not recommended that you use the machine during pregnancy other that during labor.
If you want a natural labor you need to find a care provider (preferably a midwife) to support you and catch your baby. It's never too late to change care providers if you feel your current one does not support natural birth and normal birth practices.

You also need to look into childbirth education classes that are taught by indepenent instructors, like the Bradely Method, or Birthing From Within.
Reading some good books on pregnancy and birth is helpful too- here are a few good ones:
Ina May's Guide to Childbirth by Ina May Gaskin
Birthing From Within by Pam England
Gentle Birth Choices Barbara Harper
Active Birth
Home Birth by Sheila Kitzinger (any book by Kitzinger is great)
The Thinking Woman's Guide to a Better Birth by Henci Goer

Those are just a few. There are planty more out there if you do a search for natural birth books.

Another helpful tool to acheiving a natural childbirth is to hire a doula. Doulas are experts in childbirth and alternative techniques to support normal birth. Here are some websites to find a doula:
http://www.cappa.net
http://www.dona.org
http://www.bellywomen.net (provides listings for doulas offering low or no cost doula services)

Good luck, I hope you will be able to achieve your desired birth.

It helps with basic muscle tension during pregnancy, but I wouldn't bother with it for a pain remedy in a natural childbirth.

Get the epidural. The tens machine does nothing for that kind of pain.

Tens is pretty good for pain releif. You should maybe consider trying a T Pump. It's a heat therapy pump and provides great pain releif. One of the main uses is for back pain and joint pain. They use them all the time in hospitals. If you get one, just make sure you don't set the temp too high. Ask your doctor if they can prescribe one for you.

They do - it works for chronic and acute injury type pain, so it might help with your back pain. Talk to your OB about it.
