How many reliable numerical places are in the numbers of your data is one criteria. If your data is only good to two decimal places, calculating answers to 90 places is a waste of time. The other is how precise is your neasurement device. If your meter for example is good to +/- 2%, accuracy, once again doing calculations to a million places is a waste..
