Maybe not astronauts, but robots. Robots are a lot better than losing a actual human life. But the next step is trying to find life on another planet, i think that's the most important aspect we could discover to change the history of the earth.

This is hard to answer, but it will probally deal with recent events, such as the probe to Titan, or that water may be running on the surface of Mars. If water is currently running on the surface of Mars, it increases the chances that we may find life on the surface.
