It depends on your personal opinion. Personally, I want to get married. I wouldn't dream of having children before I was married and I love having a man around to look after me. However, I don't NEED to get married. Women in today's society can work and have careers and take care of themselves. Its not like it was a few generations ago when the only option women had in life was marriage and then having children. We can do what we want and are more than capable of supporting ourselves. Having children outside of marriage is no longer frowned upon and these days you don't even need to have a partner to get pregnant! Its a fairly straightforward procedure at the hospital! So no, I don't think we need marriage to survive and I definitely don't think its essential in today's world.

No, we don't need marriage to survive, nor is it really essential, but sometimes it will be a tremendous joy to the couple, and perhaps even a blessing to many who know them. I love my partner and would love to marry him, if the time is ever right, but if it doesn't happen, I'll still love him and still stay with him to the end, no matter what. And that's what marriage is about.

If anything, the problem we have today is not that divorce is too easy, but that entering into marriage is much too easy. It's certainly far easier to trip gaily into marriage without a second thought in the US than it is in the UK, where you generally can't be married without giving three weeks' Notice of Intention to Marry or applying for a Special Licence, which usually takes some days to get anyway.

Maybe no-one should be able to marry until they've been on some kind of preparation course.

Marriage in its essence has to do with making a commitment.

Many people get married too quickly and easily, without wanting the commitment - many abandon the marriage whenever things start getting tough.

And that attitude is reflected in the world - lack of commitment. If more people were willing to make more commitment, the world would be a better place. if more marriages sustained, the world would be a better place. If more people were serious about marriage, the world would be a better place.

Essential? It could make all the difference in the world.

Marriage is an ideal, just like Democracy. It's a nice thought but impossible to carry out to the letter of the law and in most cases the spirit of the law. It doesn't make you any more in love or committed unless you are one of those weak personalities that needs constant reminding. Because society is the way it is, many of us choose to be married for the greater good of our families. My children would have no health insurance or financial protection if I were not married to my husband.
Think back to the days when your parents told you "never lie". If you can honestly say that they never lied (little white lies included) I'll eat my hat. We do it for privacy, respect and manipulation and we do it with our spouses too.
I think we have made marriage almost a requirement in this day and age but I don't think it's necessary for the survival of our planet or the human race either for that matter.

No we do not need marriage to survive in to days world, just look at the statistics marriages are getting less and the number of people getting a divorce is high.
I think the only reason you should get married is if there are any children involved.

marriage is an institution that served us so well in the past and continues to do so. It has helped prevent the spread of STDs and instill morals in the society. Plus, children need both mother and father to develop properly... There are many more benefits to list. However there are some freaks that should never have a family for other people's good.

Dear,
Marriage is the foundation to this world. If marriage does not exist there will not be civilized society. Society begins with family units and then spread all over. Do you wish when you are walking on the road to get raped? It will happen if there are no families. Do not think women as sex machines. Love the world, love your parents and soon say I do. Cheers

I think if people would read marriage vows and take them to heart, there would be less divorce. No one wants to work on their marriages anymore. My parents were married over 50 years.I've been married over 25 years. It's a matter of give'n'take. Now-a-days, everyone wants the take part,no one wants the give part.
