We do have a virus on the computer now - the message window states that a "spyware virus has been detected". This virus has changed the desktop background, but that's all I've noticed. Our computer is used mostly for internet surfing, some e-mailing and IM-ing. We do not do on-line banking.

Thank you!

AVG free is good, its free and good for about a year. I really like microsoft onelive if you have a newer machine. Its free for 90 days, and has antispyware, a backup utility, antivirus, and some things that help clean up your computer and make it faster

Looking at all the responses to this time I would say that they are all correct and proper. I would take issue with some of the solutions. Since you have yahoo utilize the toolbar to have the Norton Spyware Scanner on it. It is slow but thorough in its scan when you utilize the full scan feature. AVG is a great program and asset, however, it can recognize Trojan infiltrations it can not cure. I utilize AVG and run it automatically at 3am each day. In addition I run AntiVir, a free download from CNET, each noon. This AntiVir recognized and removed/repaired Trojans that the AVG could not!

Download.com is an excellent resource for many different software products; some free, some free to try (if you are trying to decide whether to buy). One of the best free anti-virus programs is AVG:

http://www.download.com/avg-anti-virus-f...

Also, you might want to consider free anti-spyware utilities:

Spybot Search and Destroy:

http://www.download.com/spybot-search-de...

AdAware:

Also, you will want a free firewall;

Download, install and run all 4 and you will be just about as safe as you can reasonably be; but do not ignore best practices like not opening attachments from people who you do not know, etc.

I recommend using Kaspersky antivirus. It's a very good program to keep your PC safe from viruses and spyware. As I remember, it comes in various versions, I guess you should try the simple pack without firewalls and all this internet security stuff. Just the antivirus will do.

Its all a remember of opinion. i take advantage of Avast , I somewhat have even have been given superantispyware and Malwarebytes. i latterly replaced to Comodo firewall which seems great and that i glance besides up speedier. they are all loose for inner maximum use and that i've got had no difficulty with Viruses Trojans Hackers etc. I additionally use living house windows Defender from the Microsoft internet site. it is risk-free to apply 2 anti-secret agent products yet by no skill use greater desirable than one A/V because it could reason conflicts. you will desire to run A/V and anti secret agent weekly. wish this helps

Ok, no need to panic!
I suggest you do a free online scan of your computer. You can pick up the link here by scrolling down the page http://www.mbusbyuk.info/links.html
I suggest you choose the Panda ActiveSCan link: it's extremely thorough and will remove and disinfect anything it finds.
If you need protection, I suggest you you read the security article at http://www.mbusbyuk.info/security.html and if you want to download some free protection you'll find it on the Useful Links page at the same site.
Good Luck!

Consult your local hacker or anything BUT Norton's (due to you have to pay for upgrades, then again Norton's might work)... Better yet, try your ISP (Internet Service Provider) they might have a firewall for you, try disconnecting the modem from your computer and go from there... (using the above answers)
