Both Texas and Hawaii were occupied by American pioneers prior of their annexation. In Texas, Americans peacefully enterred texas for the sake of establishing ranches and mines in addition to harbors along the Gulf's shore. In Hawaii, Americans also arrived peacefully and built plantations following the establishment of duty free imports of sugar and rice. Both situations involved the use of native populations for labor and neither situation involved extreme force until the demand for separation from the current owners was deemed both viable and important.

In Texas, the state opted to secede from Mexico due to the extreme nationalization of institutions and resources by the Mexican government, encouraged by Santa Anna. At the same time, many other Mexican terrirtories also seceded for the same reason, but Texas was the only one to secure independence. Following its annexation by America, Zachary Taylor would occupy the territory behind the Rio Grande in order to enforce the declared American border. The Mexicans believed the border to be defined farther back at the Rio Nueces, and a war would ensue to define it. The American forces would overwhelm the Mexican with very low losses being inflicted upon the Americans which would lead to further territorial expansion into the west.

In Hawaii, the Americans who had become the economic dominators of the country decided to overthrow the native government following Queen Liliuokalani's efforts to forge a stronger government which was more loyal to the native population. Unfortunately, she would fail horribly and the backlash lead to an immediate withdrawl of Hawaiian sovereignty in order to preserve the existing powers of the Monarchy.

Some believe that the government pressured this by reinstating the tariff on sugar and rice in 1875, but regardless America was seeking to extend its borders in order to prevent European powers from infringing on American sovereignty in the Western Hemisphere (remember about both the Monroe Doctrine and Manifest Destiny). Initially, President Cleveland would rescind the annexation and allowed it to become a republic in 1894, but President McKinley would reinforce the statute in 1898 due to pressure from the Spanish American War.

annexation of Texas took place after American settlers began to out number the Mexican population. The texans declared their independence and petitioned for entry into the United States. This was denied so that American relations with Mexico would not come under duress. But eventually a war would break out due to the disagreement of where the border of Texas was. After the Mexican-American War not only was Texas annexed but what is now Arizona and New Mexico (minus the Gadsen purchase)

Hawaii was a hostile economic takeover mired in corruption and subterfuge. Hawaii was a favored vacationing destination for more afluent Americans and after a strong leader died, his replacement would be conned into releasing her control of the Island kingdom.
