His shell is nice and hard but there is a particular softness towards the area near his tail. Is this normal?

1. How big is the turtle? if it is under about 2" long, this is not too uncommon.

2. Is there any discoloration, damage to the shell, malformation of the shell, etc.? If not, and it is a young turtle, just make sure it is getting the right diet and cares.

If it looks like there may be a problem, try the advice in the Medical Issues section of http://www.austinsturtlepage.com or the health section of http://www.redearslider.com

its not good what is happening is he is not getting enough nutrients that he needs like calcium and uva and uvb so it will start slow in one spot then it will spred untill his whole shell is soft so i would recomend getting a uv light and feed for cacium products.
