Actually, Kaspersky is the best AV program. It gets the highest rating in independent testing. This site has those results. I think you will be suprised at how far down the list AVG is located and its detection and removal rate.

Kaspersky is normally a pay program, but you can get it free with the AOL Active Virus Shield. It is free and requires no email account.

Okay, let's answer the first part of your question. If you go to http://www.mbusbyuk.info/links.html and scroll down the page to the free online scanners, select Panda ActiveScan. When you get to their site, make sure you do a Full System Scan (i.e. Scan My Computer). This should get rid of any viruses you may have in your system.
As far as free anti-virus and anti-spyware is concerned, you'll find links to these on the same page as the free online scanners. The programs can be trusted because I use them myself.
Good Luck!

Download.com is an excellent resource for many different software products; some free, some free to try (if you are trying to decide whether to buy). One of the best free anti-virus programs is AVG:

http://www.download.com/AVG-Anti-Virus-Free-Edition/3000-2239_4-10596553.html?tag=lst-0-1

Also, you might want to consider free anti-spyware utilities:

Spybot Search and Destroy:

http://www.download.com/Spybot-Search-Destroy/3000-8022_4-10401314.html?tag=lst-0-1

AdAware:

http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-Personal-Edition/3000-8022_4-10639408.html?tag=lst-0-1

Also, you will want a free firewall;

http://www.download.com/ZoneAlarm/3000-10435_4-10550364.html?tag=lst-0-1

Download, install and run all 4 and you will be just about as safe as you can reasonably be; but do not ignore best practices like not opening attachments from people who you do not know, etc.

Go to Lavasoft and look for Adaware Personal SE. This is a great product for viruses and you can download and use it for free.
