I'm pretty sure it's juts one of those myths. There's another one that says playing the oboe make you go crazy, but that one isn't true either. So don't worry about it. I love the oboe, it's a great instrument to play. I think you should definitely try it.

Haha, you're friend is very funny (sarcastic). We get alot of this as oboe players because we don't sound 'as good' as other beginner musicians. People often compare the sound of a bad oboe player to a 'loud quacking duck'. Many people don't like the sound of an beginner oboe player and your friend is meaning that 'oboes sound so bad that it will deafen you' and the 'shortening your life' is probably just thrown in there for a good measure. It is entirely false and studies have not shown it.

I have never heard of this. First of all, why would it shorten your lifespan? Maybe, if you're really stretching it, you could be concentratins so hard on blowing that the blood and oxygen does not reach your brain as much as normal, but that could happen with any instrument. And anyways, many things can shorten your lifespan. Like not checking your blind spot or eating processed foods.
Now for the loss of hearing, listening to loud music can cause a loss of hearing. Even a blender can damage hearing. Yes, an oboe may affect your hearing because of its high pitch, but it will never cause you to loose it completely. Whoever told you this has their stories mixed up or something.

Unless you run into some one who likes to pick on people in the band, you should be fine! In fact, I would assume that it would increase your longevity, due to the fact you exercise your lungs everytime you play it. As for the hearing, that may be true. I play guitar and I play loud, sure my hearing isn't gone, but over time, I can tell that my hearing has decreased. Just too much volume for long amounts of time does damage that can't be reversed. So I would imagine the oboe would have enough volume to damage over time.

Believe it or not this is true. I have played the oboe all of my life and I died two years ago. I was walking across the street and did not hear the fire engine roaring down the street.

I think all that backpressure must take its toll on a person's brain fluid. After a time you'll probably be skipping down the street in a gerbil costume playing your oboe trying to entice owls into your car. I've seen it happen! Tragic.
