I'd take the kids to Fort Ticonderoga for an afternoon, then to Darien Lake next morning. And of course, everyone should see Niagara Falls once in their life. Carosel Mall in Syracuse is quite an attraction; people come from Ohio, Pennsylvania and even Canada, as well as from all over New York in order to shop there. For six weeks in the summer, there's the Renaissance Festival in Sterling, New York: kids of all ages find that a blast. We took ours as high schoolers and middle schoolers, and on the way they griped and moaned about how boring it'd be - but when we got ready to leave, it was "Can we come back again?" Bottom line - be creative and look around: a fun vacation does not have to be expensive and you shouldn't have to travel halfway across the continent to have a good time!
