In the past, Xavier McDaniel was the dirtiest player. He would not only elbow, he would also headbutt you on purpose. He had many technical fouls during his playing years. He got into many rumbles and always rivaled the superstar of the other team. Xavier was so dirty that he was often traded from team to team. He even threatened his own teammates. One of them is Gary Payton. Once, when Seattle played a game against the Knicks, McDaniel asked Payton to pass him the ball; Payton, however, did not because Xavier was being guarded. Payton then took the shot. It didn't go in ending the 3rd period. McDaniel then approached Gary and told him, "do that again, and I will kill you."
At present times, I think the dirtiest player in the game is Danny Fortson. Danny is often called for flagrant fouls. This has become very regular that he is often the butt of foul jokes. You can ask any NBA expert and they will be familiar with Fortson's flagrant ways. This is the primary reason why he is often suspended. I'll give you one joke about Fortson and his flagrant fouling.

"Just when you thought that everything in the league is changing, you come upon the news: Danny Fortson suspended for one game due to flagrant foul... it's nice to see that not everything has changed."

I'm telling you, when that guy fouls, he fouls hard. Well, there you have it.

In the past the dirtiest player in the game had to be Bill Laimbeer

In the present I will have to say Ron Artest.

PAST
Karl Malone
(http://espn.go.com/page2/s/list/readers/dirtiest/players.html)
"The Mailman has been delivering violent elbows for years. Ribs, back, face, it doesn't matter. This guy is just dirty. Everyone in the NBA knows when Malone gets a rebound, watch out, 'cause those elbows are going to come around and take out whoever is unfortunate enough to be in their path."

Bill Laimbeer looked like a dirty player as well, but I've never seen him play

PRESENT
Shaquille O'Neal or Rasheed Wallace
O'Neal will elbow anyone stading in his way while Sheed will trash talk anything talk walks.

Bill Laimbeer. No question about it. I've been a Pistons fan for 20 years and even I think the guy is a douchebag. He's even a jerk off the court as I have met him quite a few times.
