I am thinking either the Buell Blast or Sportser 883.

If those are your two choices, go with the 883. The blast is a good beginner bike but you'll find that you'll grow out of it quickly (not size but power). With the 883, you have the option of upgrading it to a 1200 later if you feel the need for more power. You'll also have a lot more customizing options with the Sportster if that's a factor.

Depends first time rider? 883 is good pick. Why Harley? V Stars are really goo bikes. Intruders are also. What ever it is you want one with everything. Bags, Winshield, etc.

my hubby got a road king last summer, but that's more of an old man bike...i tease him about it, with either bike i think you'll be happy.
