Better to be safe than sorry. Drink as much as you can handle, if its' too much, let off a little. Better to have too much and have to let some out than to have to miss your appointment because of lack of water.
Good luck and drink up!

Yes ..a full bladder is necessary because it acts a window . The bladder sits anterior , or in front of the uterus. Ultrasound cannot see through gas ( it's a physics thing ) , so the full bladder pushese. the colon out of the way making a fluid filled window to your womb It also moves the bowel away from the ovaries and surrounding areas so that we as sonographers can make sure there is no pathology .

Chances are that you will have a vaginal ultrasound , and with that you do no need a full bladder , but that determintion is to be made by the tech doing the scan . vaginal ultrasound is more detailed to evaluate an early pregnancy , however because the frequency (Mhz) that the camera uses is so high in order have such great resolution , the penetration of how far into the pelvis it can see is limited . This means that if you have a large uterus , tilted uterus , are heavy-set , or even gassy that the person doing the test may have difficulty getting ovairies or the upper portions of your uterus properly. In MOST cases this isnt a factor , but it does happen about 2 out of every 10 scans .
The two types of ultrasound work together very well to give a more complete over view.

Congrats on Baby !
Good luck....and HAVE FUN ;-)!!

I"m not sure actaully, to tell you the truth, with my first son I was never told to drink water before my US. With my daughter, I didn't either, and I got several throughout the whole 9 months, I think about 5 all together. Now with my third I have gotten two already and they've told me to have a full bladder. When I arrived I had to wait and I just couldn't hold it anymore and went to the bathroom. When I was in with the tech they had me drink an entire glass of water and wait ten minutes for it to fill up. So It may be a practice thing, the experence of the tech or a not so common practice they do. I'm not sure. With each child I've had a different doctor and it seems everyone has their own way of doing things.

Sorry if that didn't help, you can always bring a water bottle with you and sip it while your waiting, wouldn' t hurt either way!

Congrats!

At this stage you will get a vaginal ultrasound because the baby is too small, so you will not need a full bladder. In fact, you will most likely want to empty your bladder before having it done to make it as comfortable as possible. They use a wand that is covered with a condom-like cover and lubed. It is inserted in your vagina. It only takes about 10-15 minutes for them to get all the measurements and pictures they need. I had one at 5 weeks to make sure it wasn't a tubal pregnancy and another one at 7 weeks, which I was able to see the baby and heartbeat. If you are closer to 7 weeks, you may be able to see the heartbeat. It was such a relief for me to see that. Congratulations and best wishes.

If it's going to be a vaginal ultrasound, your bladder won't matter. Call your doctor and ask what they kind they will do that early in the pregnancy, and ask if you need the water or not.

It will be a transvaginal ultrasound this early in the game. They will actually make you pee right before the ultrasound so your bladder is empty. Best of luck.

if you are having a u/s this early it will probably be vaginal and it won't hurt to have a full bladder this way they can get the most accurate measurements and growth. If odds come to ends they will have you empty your bladder

Yes, a full bladder is a necessary "landmark". Don't worry, you won't have to hold it long, usually they let you go potty during the exam!
