In school I am doing a debate on weather or not we should bring our troops out of Iraq. What do you think that we should do?
Thanks

Not yet. And I agree 100% with teachmepm. He has said everything I wanted to say and said it quite well! Also, for those who think our armed forces are there against their will: THERE WAS NO DRAFT! Every single military personnel volunteered to sign their name on those papers when they signed up. And they did so knowing there could be a possibility of seeing combat at some time in their military career. They had the courage and patriotism to sign on the dotted line. For those who don't think those men and women are doing what they believe to be right, where is your patriotism? Where is your courage? Our country was attacked, on our soil. We have to go to where the terrorists are to put an end to them, not wait til they come back to try again!

First of all, good luck in your preparations. You will certainly receive a lot of perspective out here!

A few things you might consider no matter which side of the debate you wind up arguing:

"Bringing home the troops" is not an absolute. Even if we began a complete withdraw (as in the 1975 exit from Viet Nam), it would take many, many months (or perhaps even a couple years) to get all of the troops and their equipment out of the Iraqi theater of operations.

A comprehensive pullout right now would leave an infant democracy with very little social infrastructure in place. There would be an immediate upsurge (much worse than we see now) of violence, criminal activity and lawlessness. The subsequent leadership vacuum would raise the risk of a totalitarian or religious-based government assuming control of Iraq. It would also raise the risk of opportunistic neighboring countries invading Iraq and attempting to gain control of its natural resources (namely oil).

Instability and violence in the region threatens the national security of the United States. I don't mean Iraq will invade our borders or immediately send terrorists to fight us in America either. What I mean is that strong anti-American dictatorships, lawlessness and massive terrorism in the Middle East impacts our lifestyle at home almost immediately through the global economy.

The days when we could say, "let's wait unitl we're attacked" to take precautions are over. It is important that we do everything politically, economically, and militarily possible to keep the peace in the world. If that sometimes means the involvement of our military forces in faraway places, so be it.

Should we try to get our guys home? Yes. Is it time to do that right now? Commanders in the theater and elected leaders in the position to decide have said, no; not yet.

Stay. That region has been a volitile hot spot for the past 2,000 years and it has just come to its boil. If we leave now it will be the reemergence of the Ottoman Empire with such a loss of personal freedoms the likes of which the world has never witnessed.

PS
The Iraq war is a real war, since the introduction of the War Powers Act as well as other legislation concerning military matters, Congress does not have to delare war in order to deploy troops, Marines, Airmen/women, or the Navy. The President is the Commander in Chief of our military forces, he deploys them as he sees fit.

We must stay. The job is not finished. Ask your teacher, if she/he gives you a project that you find hard, would they prefer you work on it until you finish it, or just give up. Even if you don't agree with the assignment, completing it will make you a better person. Quitting will just make you a quitter. And then do some research into what happened in Vietnam and surrounding areas after America quit there. Look for info on Pol Pot and "the killing fields". And do some research on the real goals of Islamic fundamentalists. Search for "Amin Al Husseini". He was the founder of the modern islamic movement, including the Palestinian movment. He also happened to be a friend and ally of Adolph Hitler, and his Muslim troops fought alongside Nazi troops in WWII. Many current islamist leaders are former students of his. Could you imagine what would have happened if we gave up and pulled out of Europe because we lost too many soldiers on D-Day, or the Battle of the Bulge? This fight is NO LESS important. The leaders of the enemy we are fighting over there are not just trying to make us leave their country. They are fighting for principles and goals as evil as the goals of the Nazis. And they will absolutely be encouraged to continue to fight us on our own soil if they believe they beat our military. Their goal is to convert all societies to Islamic control. It is what their holy book commands them to do, and they are the leaders. The moderate Muslims will not speak up, because if they do they will be killed by the extremists. If we do not beat them now, our grandchildren will still be fighting them 50 tears from now, but they will have become much stronger.

From an ethical stand point the US has an obligation to the people of Iraq.
But let us be clear on one point. Our efforts there should in no way continue to justify our Administrations actions or ambitions in Iraq. Their actions and ambitions are the cause of the situation in which we find ourselves obligated to invest further Life and Treasure in order to make amends for the administrations extremely misguided and poorly thought out strategy in dealing with Sadam.
It would seem at this point the most we could hope to ask of the people in Iraq to give us in return is a guarantee that they do not indulge in any of the terrible transgressions we falsely accused them of conducting as a reason for invading them in the first place.

Bring them home! This "war" (which it really isn't since it wasn't declared a war by an act of Congress) has been going on way too long. It's just like Vietnam -- you would have thought we would have learned a lesson from that, but apparently not. If something isn't done soon those poor troops will be over there for many more years and there will be no end in sight.

The war in Iraq thus far has taken more than 2500 lives of U.S. soldiers. Over 100,000 Iraqi civilians died. Why are we there? Osama is not from Iraq. We have more deaths on American soil(more than 30,000 deaths a year) from gun related deaths, I think we need to fix our own problems before we become the savior of the world. Whats up with Cheney and Bush? They HAVE made money off the deaths of our American soldiers. All of "Bush's cabinet hold stock effected by federal action". Companies from halliburton to Philip Morris to GE. I know people are thinking that I am gonna say they are making money off of oil and stuff and this and that. Whatever. I will tell ya what. "If Brazil can develop an ethanol industry that makes it completely independent of foreign oil, then the USA can." Why haven't they?

If we pull out now do you think the Iraq government will stabilize? If that country remains unstable will terrorist camps sprout up?

Regardless if you were pro or anti war pre invasion, there is but one choice left if we want to prevent a future rise of an extremest group in Iraq.

good luck with class and most importantly DO NOT take answers you find here as truth. Do your own research and make up your own mind!

BRING THEM HOME NOW! This is an illegal war and George Bush should be sent to Guantanamo to be tortured under his own policies and then tried for war crimes. The second "do nothing" congress needs to cut the funding immediately. I'm sick of all of these politicians tip-toeing around for the protection of their political party in the upcoming election instead of conveying the true desires of the American public they so call represent.
