Take note of the bidding. How much are you prepared to go for the item you like. Put in a maximum bid at a higher amount and leave it. Others bidding behind you will be put off when they try to bid and see the notice -you have been outbid again on their screens. Only other way is to substantially increase your maximum bid at the last minute. Other bidders wont have time to outbid you without doing likewise.

You answered your own question. Be one of the last minute bidders.
If you are serious about winning something, you have to lay down your FIRST bid in the LAST ten seconds of the auction. Bid your maximum price that you'd be willing to pay at that time, that way it doesn't give anyone a chance to out bid you upon seeing your bid. Waiting until the end to bid, helps keep down the psychological "justification" you or others might do to keep increasing the bid, even beyond what it is worth.
It is not a guarantee, but it does improve your chances. Someone could always be doing the same things, andbid a dollar more.
If you are not available to place your bid at the time the auction ends, you can use a service like auction sniper (http://www.auctionsniper.com) which will place your bids for you (for a small fee) in the last few secons of an auction.

The way i have done it in the past, is watch the item with my desktop pc then bid with my laptop.
So i can have the place bid page just ready to hit.
Another good tip is to put in a max bid lower that you wish to go then with 20 seconds to go add a higher max bid.
For example: you are bidding on a phone, there is 2min to go, you put in a max bid of £20
Then with 20 seconds EVEN IF YOU ARE THE HIGHEST BIDDER put in another max bid of £40. What will happen is the person trying to outbid you will reach your first £20 mark, then they will add small amounts to try and beat your higher max, and by that time it will be all over.
Works everytome for me, unless the person bidding against you puts in a stupid amount. If they do they are probably paying to much anyway.
Also try and sweet talk the seller before hand, i know ebay hate this but it works. They might agree to a quick sale.

sign up to Bidnip, you can tell them to put a bid in for you, and they will put it in at the specified time, we always use 8 seconds before the auction ends, you just put in your maximum bid and they will do the rest, If someone else is waiting and thinks they have won, then a sudden bid just a few seconds before the end usually wins it as it gives them no time to get a new bid in. You will get 5 free ones when you sign up, and then you can buy more, they are very cheap, and, you can even use them to bid on things that are ending while you are out or in bed if they are in a diferent country. Doesn't matter whether you are bidding on the UK site or any other countries, just put in the item number and follow the instructions.

Winning on eBay is a bit like poker. Don't let on you want something by bidding for it until about 15 minutes before the closing time. You stand more chance of sneaking up on somebody that way!! I found this out the hard way.
The person who got the necklace was probably an old hand and doing just that.
Good luck with the dress!

If you really want a item enter your maximum bid. Also keep refreshing the page near the end of the bidding and 10 sec before the end enter 2 bids higher than the last bid.

In future I would recommend only bidding at the last minute, that way no-one knows that you are interested and might put in a lower bid just before you. This really only works best if you have broadband though...
Good luck!

well you just need to put the absolute MAXIMUM you want to pay for the item in the bid box, and if it does go to someone else then at least your not going to skint yourself out trying to win it.
If you look at the bid box, it should say ''your maximum bid'' put it the most you would pay for the dress and ebay will bid for you up until your max bid price.
