We all know the list of foods we're to avoid throughout pregnancy (lunchmeat, certain fishes, soft cheeses, etc.). Are we supposed to continue avoiding the same things while nursing?

No, with the exception of fish high in mercury.

You can eat sushi and lunch meat and basically anything else. You can even drink in moderation.

It's okay to eat those while breastfeeding. You might want to avoid strong flavored foods like spicy food or food with garlic or onion because it will change the taste of the milk and baby might not like it.

Whatever you eat or drink will affect your breast milk. Different babies will react differently to different things. My daughter loved a real rich chocolate fudge icecream and everytime she ate it her baby got colic. She had to give up the chocolate for the duration of breastfeeding. Watch how your baby reacts to what you eat and avoid those things that cause problems. It is different with each baby.

You can eat whatever you want, with a few exceptions.

The only stuff to worry about is caffeine and mercury. So don't drink a lot of pop/coffee, and limit your high-mercury fish intake.
