I am in PA. I have already passed the real estate course I am preparing to go and take the test. I am not financially able to jump into this and quit my current job. I need the health benefits also for my daughter. Several agents have told me that I should not even bother because you can't make any money "part time". I won't consider it "part time" work. I consider this to be another full time job. My current job is 8 to 5. Isn't it true that the people buying and selling propery work also? I realize that this will be tough, but is it possible?

Kris, it is possible... but tough!

If I had that opportunity to work full-time and work real estate outside those hours, I would have done that to start out (but I got laid off from my job, so that wasn't the case).

Real Estate is a difficult business to get into! The most challenging part right out of the gate is PROSPECTING. Being a new agent, you don't have very many contacts outside your "sphere of influence" and you certainly don't have a name for yourself yet. So it's an uphill battle.

My suggestion to you: try to find an established agent looking for a Buyer's Agent. That is the best situation to be in when you are new! The established agent can coach you and mentor you along while gaining from their sphere and contact base, as you would be running their clients (for a commission split).

If you have any specific questions, email me!

Good luck!

Of course you can, at least start that way... I know a few people that did Real estate part time and worked 8-5. They primarily focused on this after work and on weekends. Where there's a will there's a way.

Anything is possible and the biggest competition you will ever have is not time or other circumstances. The biggest competition to accomplishing what you want is you.
I suggest that when you pass your exam and you choose a company to be affiliated with that you partner up with one of the full time agents in that company that can assist you when you can not do something due to other obligations, sure you will need to split some of your commission but something is better than nothing as you get started.
I welcome you to the industry
