Yes, many do. It is also true that many poor Caucasians have been able to use their sports proficiency to lift them out of the lower economic class that their parents are in.

Some black men do that. However, I feel that these guys need to hit the books, get some self-esteem and have seem sense of reality. They can't just put all eggs into to one basket feeling they have it made in the shade. These are narcissistic. Their career could end in a instant. I can't undertand why some risk losing everything over crime or sex with a groupie--especially when married. that Bryant. If I were his wife, I'm not accepting apologies over some jewely costing a few grand. Does't know that money can't buy you love? She betta recognize.
First, don't marry so young. Secondly, breaking the law is breaking the law. It would be harder for a celeb than the average smoe in jail. He may not be in the population section. I forgot who it was, a male celeb was in solitaire for eight months.
What about your family name. Why do they take their name the mud? Look at Clinton. Well his stepfather and half brother had already taken the Clinton name through the mud, but old Bill took the Blythe name through it. Clinton was born William Jefferson Blythe, lll.
All of these people are so devoid of morals and shame. How do they go home the to parents, kids and in-laws. Who are they to ground kids when they, themselves, can't stay out of jails like Bbby Brown & Marion "Suge" Knight?

I think that this is a valid question, but it's not just African Americans who do this. It's a trend with economically disadvantaged populations. Back in the 1940's and '50s, Jewish men ruled the basketball courts, because many Jewish people lived in poor areas. When you live in an economy depressed area; families, schools and communities don't have many resources to prepare people for high levels of technical training and education. Educating people is expensive, while athletic training isn't very expensive. To sum it up, basketball courts don't need much money to be good, while schools do. Even if the basketball court isn't well maintained, it will still be a good place to play basketball. However, if a school doesn't have good funding, it doesn't educate people well.

I'm white, middle class, liberal and so is my tweener son. He was the only non-black child on a football team in South Dallas (everyone knows this area as a "ghetto" and you almost never see white folks anywhere near there- if they are, they are probably homeless).

Anyway, I went to every game and practice. These (mostly poor) boys and thier parents were FAR more aggressive than any team I'd ever seen. They literally got beat by thier mothers if they mouthed off to the coach.

I loved those boys, most were so sweet when they weren't paying football. But it was crystal clear to everyone that WINNING those games was the way out of the hood, both for them and thier families. And they had role models (former dallas cowboy was head coach, in fact). They simply had fewer role models that could teach them other ways to excel, which limited thier opportunities for mentoring in non-sports activities.

It was quite an experience to both me and my son, who had only played on middle class, racially diverse teams up until that point We had never felt the pressure or the aggression. These folks took it very seriously compared to my other suburbanite experiences.

Just an observation that i thought might be of help... you may want to read up on any youth sports studies conducted in poor african american neighborhoods.

Good luck!

This isn't about any paper. Look at the question you posted. You're saying ALL African American athletes come from the ghetto. You're being racist and generalizing and you know it. You people think you are being clever now by trying to disguise your insults and hate messages to get past yahoo staff and it doesn't work! Stop! Find another purpose for your life and try to be a better person!

She never said that all black people live in the ghetto.

Yes some black male athletes use sports to elevate themselves from the ghetto. And why not...u should use any talents that you have to elevate yourself. Additionally there are very few black icons outside of the entertainment sports industry that black men in the ghetto can look up to. One reality of black ghettos is the low numbers of black male role models and if the images of sports and entertainers is all they see of course that's what you will aspire to be.

Well the answer to this question is simply yes. Not only do they do it to elevate themselves from the ghetto but it is also done as a sign of respect. A sort of way to signify manhood. Being able to perform in sports can take the place of not being able to become successful in other aspects of life. Us sociologist deem this "cool pose". If you look this up, it will explain how sports are used in this manner.

I can't believe you asked that question. Ask yourself, if all the black men you know play sports? If the answer is no, then that's not what all what Black people are good for. We are very multi talented, we are business owners, CEO's, homemakers, and so much more than just playing sports. As a black person you should know better.

of course.. Black males in the ghetto glorify sports hero's. They have little else to worship..They have little choice of direction to go to.
They usually only have one parent in the household. They are poor
usually poorly educated so they have limited options. So of course those with talent will try and use athletics to escape.but few succeed.
