Hi Cav,
When someone asks me about the metric tonne, I just go "oh, it's near enough an imperial ton, 1000 kg - or,
20 cwt in a ton, 56 lb to the cwt, X 16 to get ounces, and all that "old -fashioned" stuff.
However, I now know that it is not a pound of jam in a jar, but 454 gm.
Milk & petrol seems to be in litres, but I have a five gallon spare can.
If it were one shilling and threepence a pint of milk, as it was, but now 66p per litre at my local supermarket, I ponder as to whether I am better or worse off. Probably the latter.
Back to the tonne - I would explain it in everday terms as - "about a small car"
Puts a picture of the thing in one's mind, I suppose.
Oh no - I have just recalled that the coalman is going to deliver four 50kg sacks next week.
er, that would be about a quarter of a ton, then.
Happy metrics !
Bob

A tonne is a metric ton, so perhaps ton by ton e.g. the cliffs are being eroded ton by ton, with tons of stone falling into the ocean
