They are different names for the same thing. Flash is the name of the technology used to store the data, pen refers to the size.

They can also be referred to as a thumb drive (because they're the size of a thumb...)

Hello,

(ANS) A pen drive is the term used to describe physically small (minature sized) hard disk drive. Such drives can be attached to a computer using a USB port or USB slot. Pen drives can hold anything from a few hundred megabytes upto several gigabytes. The data they can hold is readbable & writable just like any normal hard disk inside a computer or PC.

**A Flash drive is a device that can be setup to hold data or information but the drives contents are ONLY semi permanent. i.e. the data can be wiped or removed during the flashing process. The flash process uses ultra violet light to wipe the drives previous contents, & once the device is flashed any previous data is deleted or gone. The drive once flashed can then recieve new data or files. Flash drives are thus only used for semi permanent data storage, & so the device can be used over & over again. Typically you wouldnt want to hold large amounts of data on a flash drive.

If you are referring to the type you plug str8 into a usb socket, then they are identical. Flash memory might come in the form of a card also, like SD or MMC.
