I organised my wedding in around four months and was laughed at in the wedding dress shop for not leaving enough time to get a dress but got on no problem. However, I was lucky enough to buy one off the peg and didn't need too many alternations. It depends where you want to get a dress from - if you could get it just from a high street shop (Monsoon, M&S, BHS etc) you may be lucky. I think you should start to look - as well as actually being able to get one - it might take you a while to find one you like. Good luck and happy shopping and wedding!

Depends on two things - 1] How picky are you and 2] How far off of the "standard" body shape are you? I'm only 5 feet tall and it took a really long time to get my dress altered because there was so much work to do. For instance, the sleeves had to be totally reconstructed because the pretty lace inset was on the end and the end was around 5 inches past my fingers when the dress first arrived.

I guess what I'm getting at is yes, you are probably leaving it too late. If they don't have your size in stock it could take a 6 weeks just to order then dress and another month for alterations - and that's assuming you can find a dress you want quickly.

I have seen some gorgeous dresses in Monsoon. I think maybe you should start trying on now. When I married in 2000, I chose my dress in January for a wedding in May. It took a few weeks to arrive, then I had one fitting and it took another few weeks to come back from that. I recommend Watters and Watters dresses - I love them. Should have just bought the dress and not got married though!

Good luck - hope it all works out well for you.

yes if you r going to a proper wedding dress shop who will make the dress to fit you unless you r getting one off the rack
3 months or even 6 months before is normal
you can buy good second hand dresses
but they still need alutering
the best thing to do is go to a proper place & have it made
im getting married in april & had my dress off the rack in the wedding shop for 150 pounds
congrat's to you

Hi, when I went to buy my wedding dress I was told that you have to order it at least 4 months before to allow for alterations. Depends where you buy the dress though, if it's one that fits straight away then you shouldn't need alterations anyway!

Yes!!!!! My friend has just ordered hers for her August wedding cause they take 6 months to arrive. I think some of them are made in the US or Japan/China etc. Also my friend looked in several shops so it takes time to choose the dress as well, but she went with the first one she saw, which I have heard usually happens. :o)
