What kind of hand do I need to reliably try to "shoot the moon" or whatever it's called, when you try to take all the hearts and the QSpades instead of none? I assume you want AKQJ of hearts, but even with this I end up losing.

You are right in the fact that you want high cards...not just the hearts.

The idea is to get rid of any low cards you might have right away...before people start discarding their hearts.

While doing this you need to monitor the suits in your hand....say for example you are playing diamonds and you play the ten and no one else has a diamond then you know every diamond in your hand is a winner.

You need to do that with every suit. If you have hands that aren't guaranteed winners than you need to be careful. If you realize you can't get them all, back out and try not to get any more.

There is also one more goal and that is "shoot the sun". This means that you win EVERY single hand of the game. I've only ever done this once...didn't even know what it was until then!!! You would then subtract 52 points from your total or add it to everyone elses.

Hope this helps.

A few tips...
1. Have only top hearts, or no hearts at all...AKQJ is reliable, but it may be better to have none at all. So when you're made to discard there's no way to lose your hearts.

2. Have stoppers in all other suits, such as the three aces. This ensures that if you lose the lead but not any points, you can gain it back easily.

3. Get rid of low cards early, but don't make it obvious you're shooting. So that before others can pass points, you get rid of losers.

4. Aim for the queen of spades last, so even if you fail you may not get a lot of the points.

5. When passing, pass small hearts or loser diamonds.

for you to shoot to the moon you better be playing with some beginners because if not the player you are playing with will love to get a heart or two just to stop you from moon shooting. That only happen once in a while.

Shooting the moon is really difficult, and if your opponets figure out what you are doing, almost impossible. Because if your opponets figure out what you are doing, one of them will take a heart to stop you, if they are smart.

What you need isn't just the face cards for hearts, but ALL (or most) the face cards, and the rest of your hand has to be really high as well. You should be really sly about doing it too, don't let attention be drawn to the fact that you are collecting hearts.

Its good to have only one or two suits in your hand...if you have more than 2 suits they'd better all be high cards to get all the hearts in the game.Good luck!
