A bbq is always good, with lots of hamburgers and "over the hill" references. Since it's autumn, and he's beginning the "autumn" of his life, that works really well, lots of leaves.

I like the luau idea mentioned above, but save that for the 50th birthday so you can have a "Hawaii 5-0" theme.

How about just a nice fall sence, you know the leaves falling, and hay outside, maybe have some hay rides if you have a farm with a horse or two, and some hay to put on the back of the wagon , and a nice little fire, with hot dogs, and marshalls, apple cider, Cause you know what 40 years old is still very young. So make it injoyable.

Cooking out, a picknick sort of affair, and really rude jokes. Some cemetaries might allow birthday parties for the aging.

The main thing, you know him better than anyone, so do the things he would like the most.

My kids bought black ballons and ribbons and crepe paper, put up a banner that read "Lordy Lordy, Mom's turned 40!!" yours could read Lordy Lordy look who's 40 or put your hubby's name in instead...in the autumn, depending on where you live it could be too chilly outside, you might want to do a "over the hill" party indoors, buffet style ( if it is around halloween, you could add halloween decos, or just do the black and autumn colors) if it is warm enough to be outside, picinc style would be less work as you could fry up chicken beforehand, potato salad, etc. so you wouldn't have to cook that day.....just put the decos outside. Have fun!

A Hawaiian luau you could wear a grass skirt and a coconut top. Serve kabobs with shrimp and pineapple. Lots of flower lays (sp?) for the guests with a totally Hawaiian theme, typical Hawaiian cuisine.
